BC Hydro
For the second straight year, BC Hydro joined Wheels In Motion as a Provincial Partner and contributed greatly to the success of events across British Columbia. For the Vancouver Wheels In Motion event, BC Hydro employees rallied around two of their co-workers who sustained spinal cord injuries within the last year. Eight teams raised more than $12,000 for Wheels In Motion in 2009 through 50/50 draws, bake sales, raffles and online fundraising. Throughout the province, BC Hydro PowerSmart teams put up interactive displays at events to educate participants about BC Hydro’s role in making BC more energy efficient and also about their involvement in the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver. McDonald’s Restaurants Early morning wheelchair challenge competitors could be heard saying, "I’m lovin’ it" as they fueled up for the competition with their complimentary morning cup of McDonald’s coffee. That was until they struggled to keep their McDonald’s "Breakfast-On-The-Go" safely on their laps as they wheeled through the challenge course! Ronald McDonald himself showed them how it was done, wheeling through the course just in time to enjoy the coffee, juice and muffins provided to events by McDonalds’s Restaurants. McDonald’s Restaurants and Ronald McDonald House also showed their support as a gold sponsor of the Toronto Wheels In Motion event and as bronze sponsor in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, London, Hamilton, Ottawa and Halifax. Scotiabank As the Presenting Partner of Wheels In Motion since its inception in 2003, Scotiabank is incredibly supportive across Canada. Scotiabankers take on many roles to make the events a success from being event leaders to committee members, participating in Wheel/walk events and Wheelchair Challenges to hosting a variety of fundraising events. Branches organize events including traditional fundraising events such as BBQs, bake sales, book sales, golf tournaments, auctions and car washes. A number of branches also organized dress down days, balloon-o-grams, and one branch had a local restaurant donate food and set up a taste testing for bank customers in return for donations. Team Scotia enjoy the competition and camaraderie of raising funds for Wheels In Motion, and most of all they are proud to make a difference in the communities where they live in work to making them more accessible and inclusive for people of all abilities. The Scotiabank Toronto Centre District employees raised an amazing $85,878.95 for Wheels In Motion - more than any other district has ever raised in a single year! The 25 branches achieved their goal through incredible teamwork and creative fundraising. Branches held traditional fundraising events such as BBQs, bake sales, book sales and auctions. A number of branches also organized car washes, dress-down days and balloon-o-grams. One branch even had a local restaurant set up a taste testing for customers and staff, in return for donations towards Wheels In Motion. Winnipeg Scotiabankers organized a "Bud, Spud and Steak Night" in May 2008 to kick off their local Wheels In Motion event. Rick Hansen Foundation Ambassador Shealon Kuly, a 17-year-old woman who incurred a spinal cord injury in a car accident in August 2007, shared her story of recovery and readjustment giving attendees an increased understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with SCI. Inspired and moved by Shealon’s story, the nearly 700 attendees raised over $18,000 for Wheels in Motion. Invacare Canada Invacare Canada helped put the ‘wheel’ in Wheels In Motion last year by providing wheelchairs for over 60 wheelchair challenge events and helping committees to promote local events using pre-event media and fundraising opportunities. Invacare Canada showed their team spirit this year sending out personalized event invitations to rally 40 staff, friends and family from the Mississauga office to participate in the Toronto Wheels In Motion event. Invacare Canada also got behind their employees fundraising efforts offering fantastic incentive prizes: every $25 raised earned participants a chance to win tickets to a Toronto Blue Jays or Toronto FC game. Employees raising more than $300 received a half day of vacation! As a result, Invacare had more participants at the Toronto event than any other year raising a total of $2418.
