We Have a Winner! Top Fundraising Individual Announced | Print |

When Elmira, Ontario’s Dennis Downey set his fundraising goal at $20, 000, he wasn’t sure he could do it. However, with the support of his employer, Manulife, his coworkers, and his friends and family, Dennis surpassed his goal and became Wheels In Motion’s Top Individual Fundraiser.

sledge hockeyFundraising efforts were kicked off with a note to donors from previous years. Dennis had been involved with Wheels In Motion since its inception in 2003, and had no shortage of contacts. But he didn’t stop there.

Dennis learned early on that raising awareness through special events was a good way to set the tone for future fundraising. He put together a tournament in which Manulife employees took to the ice to compete with the Woolwich sledge hockey team. This was the “maiden voyage in sledges” for the Manulife team, but by the time the hour was out, they were starting to get the hang of it, finding muscles they didn’t know they had. They also found a strengthened sense of the potential of people with spinal cord injury.

Employees of Manulife later participated in a Games Day ..which turned into more of a games week… in which six teams of four were given various tasks to accomplish in a wheelchair, concluding with a Wheels In Motion style relay race.

Dennis’ coworkers donated generously to Wheels In Motion after receiving personalized letters from him. The Senior Vice President even kicked the fundraising up a notch with some of his own money, before securing a hefty donation from Manulife Group Benefits.

After all was said and done, Dennis shattered his goal, raising over $23, 000. What motivated him? “It’s a dream of mine to stop any newly injured people from spending their life in a chair, and to improve the quality of life of those who must,” says Dennis, himself a quadriplegic.

Grateful to his friends and family, Dennis has accepted his much-deserved prize. We congratulate him for his success putting the small town of Elmira on the map.

Thank you to our Top Fundraising Team of 2010 | Print |

AirCanadaWe’re proud to announce that the winner of our incentive contest for Top Fundraising Team is none other than Calgary’s Team Cenovus!

Each of Team Cenovus’ five members will receive an Air Canada voucher for a ticket to the North American destination of their choice.

This team networked their way to the top, relentlessly emailing their connections with spirited requests for donations. “The guys take it really seriously,” said Cenovus team captain Shamel Elsayed. “We kept raising our fundraising goal. We had $1, 000 within a couple of weeks and we couldn’t stop there.”

In an interview, Shamel was sure to express his appreciation for Cenovus Energy’s gift-matching program, which gave members of the team an additional dollar for every dollar raised.

Team Cenovus isn’t just a fundraising machine – this team of co-workers has been known to bring a wheelchair to their lunch hour, order pizza, and practice for the Wheelchair Challenge. This was no doubt influenced by Shamel, who had been participating in wheelchair relays since the Canadian Paraplegic Association had hosted their own over twenty years ago.

Now finished with their second year racing at Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion, it’s time for this team to take a break. Maybe a vacation?

Bertie Bear’s Walk for Injured British Heroes | Print |

DarrenHeatonInspired by Rick Hansen’s Man In Motion World Tour, Darren Heaton will journey 239 miles from Derbyshire to London in a manual wheelchair to raise funds for injured Grenadier Guards.

Darren sustained a spinal cord injury in 2003 after a high fall. Initially he had trouble adapting to life in a wheelchair, but with support from his family and mentoring from peers at Back Up Trust, a UK-based charity that supports people with SCI, life started to look better.

While in the mentoring program, Darren came across a video of Rick Hansen on YouTube. “This guy could do so much,” thought Darren. “Maybe I can too.”

And he will – Darren’s plan to support the Guards by making the journey to their Regimental Headquarters in Wellington Barracks has already developed quite a following with no shortage of enthusiasm. As he prepares for this great adventure, and for others to come, Darren is showing the world how important it is to “keep pushing forward all the time, no matter what,” just as Rick did 25 years ago.

Darren will make his journey with the Grenadier Guards’ mascot Bertie Bear on September 14, 2010. For more information or to donate, visit the Walk for Heroes webpage or check out their Facebook page.

Wheels In Motion took place on Sunday, June 13 in communities across Canada. Over 4000 people came together and raised funds for people living with spinal cord injury. If you participated, volunteered, or donated to Wheels In Motion, you played an important role in improving quality of life for people with spinal cord injury in your community.

Don’t forget, there’s still time to raise money that will count towards this year’s Wheels In Motion. Participants can continue their fundraising efforts until June 30th and be eligible for the top fundraising prizes.

Thank you to everyone involved! You made for another successful year!
